We are looking for dissertation supervisors to work with students to guide and assist them with the research aspects of their MA dissertations. The role requires a commitment to supporting students in developing their research awareness and capacity to undertake and complete research at MA level.

Requirements for the post holder include:

  • A practicing UKCP registered psychotherapist or equivalent with knowledge of integrative approaches.
  • Experience of undertaking or supervising qualitative research, in one of the research methods that Minster employs, to at least MA level, ideally in the field of psychotherapy or counselling.
  • Understanding of ethical approval processes for research.

The Minster Centre has made a commitment to working to increase EDI in counselling and psychotherapy.  We particularly welcome applications from people from groups that are underrepresented in the field of psychotherapy and counselling and in our organisation, including people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, the LGBT+ community, care leavers, disabled people and people from other minorities.  Staff are also offered additional training and reflection opportunities. This post is being advertised internally and externally.

Terms and conditions

Salary: This is calculated based on £53.35 per contact hour for 7 hours of contact time with supervisees plus a fee of £175.80 for reading two drafts of the dissertation (one in sections as it develops, and one final fee).  This amounts to £549.25 per dissertation supervisee.  Some students are provided with additional dissertation supervision as part of a learning support agreement, this will be paid at the contact hour rate.  Additional payments of £87.90 are made for any dissertations marked.

Hours: A timetable will be agreed with each supervisee for completion of their dissertation including reading of drafts.  The timing of individual supervision sessions can be agreed with the students.    Dissertation supervisors are expected to be available for meetings at reasonable notice especially during the months immediately preceding submission deadlines.

Contract: We are moving to a system of offering fixed term 1-year contracts for dissertation supervision.  Dissertation supervisors who supervise small numbers of students and don’t otherwise work for the Minster Centre may alternatively opt to undertake this work on a self-employed basis.  Contracts are expected to start in February 2024 and volume of work will be dependent on numbers of students and research methods selected by students.

The Minster Centre has made a commitment to working to increase EDI in counselling and psychotherapy.  Specifically increasing the diversity of members of the profession, increasing the accessibility and suitability of counselling and psychotherapy for all communities and identities, making our training more accessible and relevant to trainees from all backgrounds and intersectionalities, and equipping the therapists we train to work in a diverse society.  As an experiential training and one that seeks to work at depth this is important work that leads us to question, sometimes radically, our assumptions as therapists and trainers and to explore and challenge our own identities.  You will be invited to join us in additional training and reflection as part of this work.

Please review whether you currently have any Minster Centre students as clients and in which year and let us know if this is the case so that we can manage any potential dual relationships.
